Cathy Wilkes

"Artistically speaking, Cathy Wilkes takes no prisoners: she declines press interviews and her work is devoid of the usual interpretative material. It's a risky strategy which may alienate some members of the potentially interested audience; on the other hand, this fundamentalist approach leaves the field clear, for those with sufficient motivation, to delve deeper."
Giles Sutherland (Sunday Herald, 19 May 2002)Belfast born and Glasgow based artist Cathy Wilkes was invited to show at Inverleith House alongside a hand picked selection of botanical images titled ‘The Dapuri Drawings'.
Wilkes works occupied Inverleith House's ground floor gallery and her array of apparently ‘discarded' objects included two radiators, various pieces of wood and a number of small metal trays. It is the seemingly random arrangement of Wilkes objects which lends itself to further questioning and intrigue. In each of the two larger ground floor rooms there were approximately symmetrical figurative compositions made up of drawings, paintings and two tableau vivant sculptures. All of these elements came together to form one work.
Cathy Wilkes has shown extensively and is represented by The Modern Institute Glasgow.
