About this Silver Lime
Tilia tomentosa is widely grown as an ornamental tree throughout Europe, and has been in cultivation since 1767. Typically growing up to 35m tall, this tree is of sturdy nature and very tolerant of urban pollution, soil compaction, heat, and drought.
In summer, the Tilia tomentosa produces flowers in subtle and pale hues of yellow, with a strong, distinctive scent and a pale green leaf system. Its flowers are pollinated by honeybees; however the nectar they produce contains sugars which cannot be digested by certain species of bee, causing them to become comatose in a toxic reaction. Its flowers also have medicinal properties and are used in a tea infusion which is consumed for its antispasmodic, diaphoretic and sedative properties.
The Tilia tomentosa’s attractive silver foliage has captured the attention of the nursery trade, resulting in a number of cultivated forms being produced. Perhaps the most widely cultivated is the weeping form, which is called ‘Petiolaris’.
