About this Chinese Linden
Chinese linden or lime is only found growing wild in China. The distinctive heart-shaped leaves are a feature of the many species of lime trees found throughout the northern hemisphere temperate woodlands. The small round fruits are attached to large papery wings that aid their dispersal on the wind.
Lime flowers appear later in the summer and are valued as a source of nectar for bees. In many countries lime honey is produced and has a distinctive flavour. In China, this species of lime is famous in the Changbai Mountains, on the border with North Korea, as the source of honey. Dead bees can be found in large numbers below flowering lime trees. It was thought that lime nectar may be toxic to bees, but this theory remains unsupported by evidence. It seems most likely that the trees just happen to flower at a time when bees are reaching the natural end of their lives.
