CALL FOR ENTRIES 2020

The creation of the Florilegium is a wonderful opportunity for artists around the world to create works featuring or inspired by plants from their country that are also associated with RBGE, one of the world’s leading Botanic Gardens. There is also the accolade of having works selected for Scotland’s National Collection of Botanical art, joining artists such as Eve Bennett, Lillian Snelling, Margaret Stones, Rodella Purves, Işik Güner, Nicola Macartney and Sansanee Deekrajang.

The RBGE is grateful to the James and Eve Bennett Trust Fund for their financial support of prizes for the Florilegium.

Following the successful launch of the Florilegium at the 2019 BISCOT Exhibition artists are invited to submit works for consideration for the 2020 collection.

Florilegium Plant List

Requirements:

It is expected that works that are selected for the Florilegium will be donated to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh along with exclusive rights of reproduction.

Works submitted for consideration must feature or be inspired by a plant species from the list available on the Florilegium website (above) or one that is included in the RBGE Catalogue of the Living Collections.

Information on the provenance of the plant material used (e.g. RBGE Accession Number, commercial sources, etc) must be provided with all submissions.

Two-dimensional works must conform to one of 4 window sizes:

  • A5 (14.8 x 21cm)
  • A4 (21 x 29.7cm)
  • A3 (29.7 x 42cm)
  • A2 (42 x 59.4 cm)

This can include a margin or you may wish to take your painting to the edge where appropriate.The paper must be at least 2 cm larger than window size all round.

Works of different sizes may be considered where appropriate.

In order to be considered for the 2020 collection a high-resolution (minimum of 300dpi / 2400 pixels, .tiff or .jpg files) digital image of the completed work must be submitted, accompanied by the application form (available from the Florilegium website), by Friday 24th July 2020.

Following the selection process successful artists will be contacted to arrange shipping, contracts, etc.

All insurance and shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist.

Please email the Artist Coordinator, Sarah Howard, to express your interest in creating a work or works featuring species from the list. Where necessary, Sarah can help direct you to the appropriate contact at RBGE and and take bookings for use of the Cottage at RBGE (no charge) where plant material can be made available.

If you are painting a species that is available locally we strongly encourage you to explore local botanic gardens and / or to make contact with a local botanist or horticulturist.
