This was the first time Keith Farquhar's and Mark Leckey's work had been exhibited together. Their interests are rooted in popular culture, and whilst Farquhar predominantly makes sculpture and Leckey, films, both have made music; Farquhar with ‘The Male Nurse', and Leckey with; ‘Genital Panic'. ‘donAteller', and ‘Jack Too Jack', indicated by the fact that Andrew Hobson also appeared with Keith in ‘The Male Nurse' - favoured by John Peel in the mid ‘nineties, for whom they did two sessions and reached his ‘Festive Fifty' in 1998, (with ‘My Own Private Patrick Swayzee').
For Inverleith House, Keith Farquhar created a sculptural installation on the ground floor consisting of 30 seated figures made of brand new red, white and heather grey hooded tops and jeans - lining the walls and facing a deep turned-up frieze of indigo blue denim. In the middle room, trapped behind this frieze was a silhouette portrait of the gallery's curator, in blue and white Paisley bohemia. This was accompanied by the recorded refrain; ‘Nice pair of trainers, shoes, jeans and top . . . ‘, taken from the 1985 Thames TV documentary ‘Hooligan', about the ICF (Intercity Firm), at West Ham United.
Keith Farquhar (b. Edinburgh, 1969) was educated at Edinburgh College of Art and Goldsmiths College, London and has exhibited at: Nyehaus, New York; Galerie Neu, Berlin and Anthony Reynolds, London.Keith Farquhar gave a gallery talk at Inverleith House on Saturday 3 December to accompany this exhibition.
