Sabine Loos, PhD
Sabine, a biologist and trained learning therapist, resides with her family in Thuringia, Germany.
Since her earliest years, she has been devoted to drawing and painting, with a particular passion for the local flora. She captures these in traditional plant portraits with a modern twist. Her enthusiasm for detailed botanical illustrations led her to pursue the Botanical Illustration Diploma course at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. This experience not only refined her technical skills, but also broadened her artistic perspective, allowing her to blend scientific accuracy with artistic expression seamlessly.
Sabine aims to contribute to the growing popularity of botanical art in Germany and guide enthusiasts on their creative journeys. For several years, she has been working in her own studio as a freelance botanical artists and lecturer.
Title of the Project:
Plants of the Hannoversche Moorgeest
About the Project:
I chose the Rosaceae plant family as a subject for my final botanical watercolour pieces. The Rosaceae family, or rose family, encompasses many of the most important and valuable fruits for humanity, highlighting their diversity and ecological as well as cultural importance. This family includes species that are integral to human nutrition, culture and health. Rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre, these plants have been domesticated over thousands of years and hold central roles in myths, legends, and cultural traditions worldwide. Furthermore, Rosaceae members contribute to ecological health as food sources for insects and other wildlife. Several plants are valued in folk medicine for their therapeutic properties. My project was designed to be a tribute to a plant family that is a true gift to us. By emphasizing beauty, utility and significance, it highlights our intertwined existence with nature and the importance of preserving and honouring this connection.
