Members Talk:Gesneriaceae at RBGE - recent projects and current research.
-
The Gesneriaceae is a family of c. 3200 species, mainly from the tropics and subtropics. Many species have colourful and showy flowers and are cultivated as ornamental plants such as African violets (Streptocarpus) and lipstick plants (Aeschynanthus) which come from the rainforests of Southeast Asia. We have a long history of research on the family at RBGE and very important collections in the gardens, herbarium and library. Hannah Atkins will give an update on recent projects funded by the Small Projects Fund on the Gesneriaceae, including curation of the collections, a new online resource centre and give a brief research update with a focus on Cyrtandra, the largest genus in the family.
