Autumn Palette at Benmore
-
A botanical art weekend exploring shape and colour using the tree collections at Benmore. We will be drawing plants from life, outdoors wherever possible, but specific experience drawing plants outdoors in the field is not needed.
Summary
Join us for an immersive, reflective and experimental weekend exploring the wonderful array of autumn colour of trees and leaves at Benmore Botanic Garden. We’ll find leaves in many shades of gold, red and brown; some as long as your arm, others as small as your little fingernail! We will begin with fast plant poses – loose and expressive sketches of whole trees outdoors in the garden, then move on to more considered and mindful observations of leaves, fruits and other fascinating details, with an emphasis on lifelike proportions, shapes and colours. We will use observational drawing to take a close-up look at some of the unique features of the plants and explore the use of colour in various media to capture their vibrancy. Finally, we will take a playful look at our drawings of the plants and break them down into more graphic or even abstract representations.
The weekend is suitable for learners with some drawing experience, and for those with different art backgrounds who are interested in exploring plants and colour. Specific experience drawing plants outdoors in the field is not needed. The emphasis is on process and observation - learning and developing skills for seeing and drawing, having fun and experimenting. Teaching is a combination of demonstrations, group discussions and supported independent work. The weekend includes plenty of opportunities to explore the garden, including outside normal opening times, when we have this wonderful space all to ourselves.
